Tuna Season
May 31, 2019Port Phillip Bay is one of those places that keeps surprising you. Stretching over 1,900 square kilometres across the heart of Victoria, it is one of Australia’s largest and most diverse bay fisheries — and for those who know where to look and when to go, it is nothing short of extraordinary. From the shallow weed beds along the eastern shoreline to the deep shipping channels that carve through the middle of the Bay, every corner holds something different and every trip has the potential to produce something special. Yet despite all of this, Port Phillip Bay remains genuinely underrated on the national fishing stage — and those of us who fish it regularly would not have it any other way.
The species diversity inside Port Phillip Bay is what truly sets it apart from other fisheries around the country. Kingfish are the glamour target — powerful, fast, and notoriously difficult to land — and the Bay holds some genuinely impressive specimens that push well past the metre mark during peak season. Snapper are another iconic Bay species, with the annual snapper run drawing anglers from across Victoria every year in pursuit of big, hard-fighting reds. Beyond those headline species, the Bay also produces excellent catches of whiting, flathead, calamari, salmon, and trevally throughout the year, meaning there is almost always something worth chasing regardless of the season or the conditions on any given day.
One of the great things about fishing Port Phillip Bay is its accessibility. Unlike offshore fishing destinations that require long runs and a significant weather window, the Bay offers relatively sheltered conditions for much of the year, making it a practical and enjoyable option for anglers of all experience levels and all ages. Families with young children, first-time fishing charter guests, and seasoned offshore veterans all find something to love out on the Bay. The variety of fishing styles available — from drifting soft plastics over the channels for flathead to live baiting for kingfish around the shipping markers — means there is always a new technique to learn and a new part of the Bay to explore.
Timing your trip to match the seasons makes a significant difference to what you are likely to encounter on the water. Spring and early summer bring the famous snapper run, with big schools of quality fish moving into the Bay to feed and creating some of the most exciting fishing of the entire year. Summer and autumn are prime time for kingfish, with fish stacking up around structure and showing aggressively on the surface during the best sessions. Winter, while cooler on deck, produces outstanding whiting and calamari fishing for those willing to rug up and put in the effort. Port Phillip Bay genuinely fishes well twelve months of the year — it simply requires knowing what to target and where to find them at any given time.
